KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysia could pursue lawsuits towards Goldman Sachs over the U.S. funding financial institution’s position within the multi-billion greenback corruption scandal at state fund 1MDB, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated in an interview with CNBC.

Goldman settled with Malaysia in 2020 by agreeing to pay $2.5 billion in money and guaranteeing the return of $1.4 billion in property to the nation in trade for dropping all prison fees towards the financial institution.

However Anwar, who got here to energy in late 2022, stated earlier this yr that Malaysia was re-evaluating the deal because the settlement sum was small.

“I’m not discounting the potential of continuing once more with the lawsuits,” Anwar instructed CNBC in an interview aired on Monday.

Malaysia can be contemplating different choices, together with negotiations, Anwar stated.

Goldman didn’t instantly reply to a Reuters request for remark.

The U.S. financial institution has at all times denied wrongdoing within the 1MDB case.

Malaysian and U.S. authorities estimate some $4.5 billion have been stolen from 1MDB between 2009 and 2014, in a globe-spanning scheme that implicated high-level authorities and banking officers in Malaysia and elsewhere.

Goldman had helped 1MDB elevate $6.5 billion in two bond choices, incomes itself $600 million in charges, in line with the U.S. Justice Division.

As a part of the 2020 settlement, Goldman can be required to make a one-time interim cost of $250 million if the Malaysian authorities has not acquired at the least $500 million in property and proceeds by August 2022, the financial institution stated in a regulatory submitting this yr.

The 2 events disagreed over whether or not Malaysia recovered at the least $500 million as of August 2022 and whether or not any interim cost was due, Goldman stated.

The dispute can be settled by arbitration if the 2 are unable to resolve the matter, the financial institution stated.
